I’ve been listening to Apollo Ghosts almost nonstop since their album, Hastings Sunrise, came out. They’re a very exciting listen, bringing to mind the best of 90s indie rock and pop, 80s twee, and late 70s post-punk. They also have a new EP out called Forgotten Triangle. It’s also definitely worth checking out.
Their sound is reminiscent of the K records bands of the late 80s/early 90s while still sounding like they’ve paid attention to everything that’s happened since then. The songs tend to be quite short, usually quite fast, and always very catchy. The band sounds like they’re having an absolute blast tearing through these songs, and that is a huge part of the appeal. But lauding the band on energy alone would be selling them short. These songs contain more ideas and hooks in their short run times than the average pop song of this decade. The record and EP are both slow burners: while being a great listen the first time there are many hidden details rewarded on repeat listens. Overall, a very recommended listen.
The record and EP are available at Catbird Records.
